We appreciate your trust in us.

The Grand Western Tour has been taking students on cross-country adventures since 1964. We appreciate the trust that parents like you have placed in us for over 50 years. It is a responsibility that we do not take lightly. Our staff is trained to look after the welfare of your children.

We have an experienced and trusted staff, comprised primarily of teachers who specialize in working with teenagers. They are skilled in providing students with a balance of independence and oversight; encouragement and discipline; guidance and leadership.

What Parents Say...

“All three of my children had a great experience on the Grand Western Tour. They loved their travels and met so many friends who they have stayed in touch with through college and beyond.”
— Cotton Barnes, Raleigh

“The Grand Western Tour provided my son an incredible experience exploring the United States with his peers. He saw amazing sights, met new friends from all over, and had the most memorable summer ever. It was the experience of a lifetime.  My daughter is looking forward to her Grand Western Tour adventure this summer!”
— Holly Austin, Raleigh

"GWT was a summer that my daughter, Laura (2012), and I will never forget! The tradition of the Tour for us was so special in that friendships were cultivated that transcend generations. Rarely do we travel anywhere together that one of us doesn't make a connection leading back to the summers on the bus!"
— Laura Underwood Valentine (1981)- Richmond, VA

Frequently Asked Questions

Do chaperones remain with students during free time or shopping excursions? Students will be allowed to go shopping in groups of three or more. They will not always be accompanied by staff members but will be given a limited amount of time and instructions on where to go and when to return.

Are students allowed to leave the tour to visit with parents, relatives or friends? Students are only allowed to leave the group to visit a friend or relative if their parents have provided written permission before the tour begins. A telephone call is not acceptable.

How are roommates selected? Roommates will be assigned for each stop – usually four to a room. Assignments will be varied as much as possible to encourage making new friends. Our experience has proven that the fairest method is "the luck of the draw" to ensure that students have the opportunity to get to know each other.

What happens if a student gets sick on the tour? If a student becomes ill, a member of the tour staff will stay behind and obtain the appropriate care and assistance, as recommended by a physician, until a parent or guardian arrives. All medical expenses and the expenses of the staff member while remaining behind, as well as expenses to rejoin the group, is the responsibility of the student’s parents.

Should students bring spending money on the tour? Students are encouraged to bring spending money to cover certain meals, snacks and souvenirs. Most students bring a debt or credit card to limit the amount of cash carried.

Are cell phones permitted? Cell phones are permitted, but the use of cell phones may be restricted as the Western Tour staff deems necessary or appropriate.  The main purpose of the trip is to experience new people and places.
What can I bring on the trip? Luggage is limited to one suitcase (no duffel bags) no larger than 30” high x 20” wide x 12” deep. Students may bring a pillow, blanket, light jacket and will be provided a backpack to be used as a carry-on bag on the bus. Many stops will have facilities available so that clothes may be washed and dried during free time. A detailed packing list will be provided prior to the trip, or can be downloaded by clicking on the link to the right.
